1998 Mario Savio Student Activist Award Honoree
12 year old Steven Cozza is a seventh grader at Petaluma Junior High School and founded Scouting For All last year which has begun a petition drive to get the Boy Scouts to change their policy of discrimination. “The Boy Scouts of America is a great program with one bad thing. It discriminates against gay youth and adults,” he explains. “The Scout Law says a scout should treat others as he would want to be treated. I don’t know anyone who wants to be discriminated against the way the Boy Scouts of America discriminates against gays.” Steven hopes to collect over one million signatures, and has collected over 3,000 already. Petitions asking the Boy Scouts to allow gays to join are circulating in the United States and in other countries, as people download them from his internet web site. Steven has been meeting with the media, politicians and speaking to community groups and churches to further the cause. Steven hopes to become an Eagle Scout with a project involving Face to Face, which helps people who are HIV positive.
