ACLU of Sonoma County
Our Mission
Sonoma County members of the American Civil Liberties Union have been active since the mid-1950s. At the end of 1966 members began to organize to form a permanent chapter. On December 14, 1968, the Sonoma Chapter officially became an ACLU chapter, dedicating itself to protect the civil liberties, civil rights and freedoms guaranteed by the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights.
The ACLU of Sonoma County is part of the American Civil Liberties Union, which has fought to protect and expand civil liberties for all people throughout the United States since 1920, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California, which was founded in 1934.
The Sonoma Chapter was awarded the 2002 Dick Criley Activism Award by the ACLU of Northern California. The award was created to honor the ACLU Chapter that has done the most to activate their members. The ACLU of Northern California has honored chapter board members Steve Fabian (1988) and Judith Volkart (2003) for their activism with the Lola Hanzel Courageous Advocacy Award.
